78: Disrupters or Game Changers: Keeping Tabs on Health Care’s New Market Entrants

Are new entrants to the health care market really disrupting the health care landscape? Or are they just “changing the game” for physicians and, ultimately, consumers? Join us for this week’s Sg2 Perspectives, as host Trevor DaRin, Sg2 Director, becomes our guest expert! He breaks down disrupters vs game changers in the health care industry, how the game changers—big tech, payers, new physician group models, retail transactional care—can impact health system care continuums and what organizations can do to prepare.

Sg2 members can access our Executive Briefing, Game Changers Take Aim at the Full System of CARE, for more key takeaways on nontraditional entrants to the health care landscape.

Sg2 members are also invited to take our 5-minute survey to provide feedback and help us shape future Sg2 content and communications.

77: System of CARE: Optimizing Your Ambulatory Strategy

In talking to Sg2 members nationwide, one thing is clear: ambulatory strategy is currently top of mind, whether it’s due to disruption by new entrants in the health care space or the variability of specific procedure shifts. In this week’s Sg2 Perspectives, we welcome Sg2 Associate Principal Chad Giese, Director Josh Aaker and Principal Mike Strilesky as we dive into Part 2 of our unofficial System of CARE series to discuss ambulatory optimization strategy from a health system enterprise perspective, as well as a service line perspective, including transitions to the ASC and the CMS inpatient-only list.

74: Physician Enterprise Strategy: In a World of New Dynamics, Relationships Still Matter

As the COVID-19 pandemic impacted physician office revenue, many believed health systems would acquire smaller practices. While this did occur, there has also been a reshaping of physician–health system relationships, along with the appearance of alternative paths for physician groups. This week on Sg2 Perspectives, Sg2’s Principal Jennifer O’Connor and Associate Principal Michael Lutkus dig into the state of physician groups—from disrupters in the market and private equity investments to strengthening the value of providers in the care continuum or even spinning them out to become good channel partners.

Sg2 members can learn more in Jennifer O’Connor’s Executive Briefing, Rethinking Physician Enterprise Strategy.

73: System of CARE: AMC Channel Strategy—Referrals and Relationships

Previously on Sg2 Perspectives, we discussed our care continuum framework—the System of CARE—and how health systems can attract and retain patients within their care continuum. This week, we shift that discussion to focus on patient access strategy for academic medical centers (AMCs), as Sg2’s Intelligence Director and Medicine Lead Justin Cassidy, PhD, and Director of Strategic Analytics Rahul Gandhi join us to talk about how AMCs traditionally think about patient access channels, key challenges in maintaining and growing referrals, and the importance of forming relationships with payers, physicians and patients to understand access channels and hone strategy.

Check out Sg2 Perspectives episode 68, System of CARE (Part 1 of 3): Not Your Mother’s Channel Strategy, for the first episode in this unofficial series!

72: Reprioritizing Priorities: How Advent Health Advances Its Strategic Agenda

After interviewing CEO of Advent Health Terry Shaw on the health system’s new financial and clinical realities earlier this year, we realized we wanted to expand on some of the themes from that conversation. So this week  Advent Health’s Corporate Vice President of Strategic Planning Josef Ghosn joins Sg2 Perspectives, along with special guest Bill Woodson, to dig deeper into the system’s accelerated priorities (eg, consumerism), its three-phase strategy development process—formulation, execution, activation—and how the role of the strategy officer is evolving.

We recommend revisiting Sg2 Perspectives episode 61, Shifting Goals and Emerging Priorities: Interview With Terry Shaw, President/CEO, AdventHealth, to hear how this conversation started!

71: The Art of Team Play: How Yale New Haven Health’s Finance and Strategy Teams Partner to Achieve Outstanding Results

In larger health systems, finance and strategy teams tend to speak different languages and work more in parallel than in tandem. In this week’s episode of Sg2 Perspectives, Yale New Haven Health’s CFO Vincent Tammaro and CSO Matthew Comerford discuss how their two teams partner to drive strategic planning and focus the organization on growth initiatives, as well as “the art of team play” that goes beyond just strategy and finance to incorporate a true team effort to work on behalf of the health system and—most importantly—the patients.

69: From Disrupter to Partner: Privia Health and Health First

This week on Sg2 Perspectives we discuss a new approach to a common challenge: physician alignment. Health First needed a new physician alignment mechanism, and Privia Health’s expertise in technology and value-based care made them the ideal partner. Partnering is never easy, but Drew Rector, Chief Strategy Officer at Health First, and Mike Flammini, Senior Vice President of Business Development with Privia Health, share what their organizations learned in the process and what they hope their new physician alignment model can achieve.
