Sg2 Experts

As national vice president for intelligence, Michael leads Sg2’s business segment and intelligence practice responsible for supporting academic medical centers (AMCs), academic health systems and children’s hospitals. He also focuses on advancing thought leadership for these member segments through collaboration with Vizient Member Networks and other Vizient experts, with a specific focus on the networks serving chief executive officers and chief strategy officers.

Michael works with both academic medical center and international clients to provide a better understanding of leading practices in market trends, health care innovation and clinical advances, incorporating both domestic and global health care perspectives.

During his time at Sg2 and Vizient, Michael has held several leadership positions, including executive officer for Vizient’s AMC CEO and CSO Member Network, client relations lead for Sg2’s international membership, and coleader of the Sg2 Service team. In each of these roles he aimed to help health care executives achieve their organizational strategic growth and performance goals by proactively aligning Sg2 Intelligence and Analytics resources with organizations’ specific needs and supporting their engagement in value-driven initiatives.

Prior to joining Sg2, Michael was the vice president of consulting and business development for a specialty hospital and technology firm. He was responsible for identifying new business opportunities for technology and specialty facility joint ventures, developing and managing strategic business relationships with technology vendors, and managing consulting engagements. His experience also includes leadership roles at the Sachs Group, a pioneering health care analytics firm, as well as strategic leadership and business development responsibilities at Inova Health System, an integrated health system.

Michael earned an MS in health administration from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and a BA, summa cum laude, in economics from King College.

Madeleine leverages a decade of clinical experience in leading the development and application of Sg2’s data analytic tools and providing clinical insight for all Sg2 research—service line, strategic planning, performance strategy and clinical technology. As medical director, she provides thought leadership in quality in collaboration with experts across the Vizient and Sg2 organization, and she partners with member health systems as a strategic advisor and health care industry expert in market strategy, quality and analytics.

Her involvement with the annual updates of Sg2’s Impact of Change® forecasts and CARE Grouper ensures rigorous clinical oversight is applied. In addition, she oversees the development of new data analytic methodologies and integration with Vizient analytics.

Madeleine is a trusted advisor to many health systems and nationally recognized children’s hospitals and provides thought leadership to Sg2’s women’s health and pediatrics Intelligence teams. She is a frequent speaker at Sg2 educational events, executive leadership meetings, board retreats and industry conferences. In addition, Madeleine applies her clinical expertise to customized client engagements that utilize Sg2 Analytics for strategic planning, clinical integration, innovation and technology acquisition, care redesign optimization, and facility planning.

Board certified in pediatrics, Madeleine spent more than 10 years in clinical practice, including serving as a hospitalist at Boston Children’s Hospital and a faculty member of Harvard Medical School. She was a past clinical advisor for the Children’s Hospital Association and a keynote speaker at its annual meetings.

Madeleine received an MD from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and completed her internship and residency in pediatrics at Yale New Haven Hospital. Her civic duties include medical volunteer work for a community health center.

Bill is a visionary on the future of health care and serves as a national thought leader for Sg2. As senior principal, he leads Sg2’s strategic planning research, focusing on developments in health care strategy, policy and growth. He is a frequent keynote speaker at Sg2 events and other industry conferences and regularly advises management teams, boards and professional organizations on the changing health care landscape and how to respond to new payment models. Bill is regularly quoted in industry journals and business magazines such as Fortune.

With more than 20 years of experience in health care strategic planning, strategic marketing, market forecasting, health system development and public policy, Bill’s areas of expertise include market evolution, care delivery innovation, organizational design, strategic partnerships (including physician-hospital alignment) and all aspects of System of CARE planning.

Before joining Sg2, Bill worked for Solucient (now Truven), where he helped manage the company’s suite of strategic planning and marketing products. He also worked in PricewaterhouseCoopers’ health care consulting practice, where he led strategic planning, service line development, capital planning and health system merger engagements. He began his career as a legislative assistant for health care policy for Congressman Bill Lowery of California.

Bill received his MBA from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and his BA from Yale University.

As a thought leader on the shift to value-based care, Jeff prepares clients by helping them understand the implications of both macro- and microlevel emerging trends impacting health care. He plays a key role in the development of Sg2 Intelligence resources and educational offerings and is a frequent presenter and educator on multiple topics, including health care reform, consumerism and patient engagement, ambulatory strategy and leading practices in care redesign.

Jeff has more than 20 years of health care advisory and consulting experience, with specific areas of expertise including strategic planning, process improvement, operational effectiveness and organizational change.

Before joining Sg2, Jeff was the vice president of assessments at Cardinal Health in Dublin, OH, where he identified opportunities for improvement and recommended specific strategies to client organizations. He also led health care consulting projects focused on improving profitability, quality and service for both specific departments and entire organizations. During his tenure, Jeff helped identify opportunities that yielded an average of 12% operating improvement. In his last 5 years, he participated in or led an average of 15 assessments per year. He was integral to the development of Cardinal Health’s “patient throughput” product in 2002.

Prior to his work at Cardinal Health, Jeff served as a project director for West Hudson, Inc (now part of Cardinal Health). There, he facilitated the implementation of hospital-based quality-, service- and cost-related process improvements both inter- and intradepartmentally.

Jeff received an MS in organizational psychology from Springfield College in Massachusetts and a BS with a double major in economics and psychology from Texas Christian University.

As a member of Sg2’s Intelligence team, Josh contributes to the development of cardiovascular intelligence by evaluating the impact of emerging trends and technologies on care delivery. He helps develop Sg2’s cardiovascular offerings, including publications, educational events and analytical tools. He also is active in working with Sg2’s life science and supply partners.

Prior to joining Sg2, Josh received a PhD in neurobiology from the University of Chicago, where he studied the application of data analytics in understanding how oligodendrocytes function. In his graduate research, Josh leveraged genomics technologies to identify novel proteins involved in development to provide tools for the study of multiple sclerosis. He previously earned a BA in neurobiology from Macalester College and is a member of their local alumni association.

Josh has published his work in several international scientific journals and has also presented at numerous national and international conferences. In his spare time, he enjoys participating in his book club, learning to cook and traveling.

As a vice president of business development, Amy is responsible for new business growth focused on the supplier segment of the market, including pharmaceutical, medical device and life science companies.

Prior to joining Sg2, Amy worked with Press Ganey Associates Inc as vice president of ambulatory services, where she guided large medical practices to improve and grow market share, and also provided education and insight regarding regulatory changes affecting the physician practice market.

Additionally, Amy has held positions with GE Healthcare and the TriZetto Group. She has extensive experience as a consultant in the areas of medical practice start-ups, physician compensation planning and revenue cycle reengineering.

Amy holds a bachelor of science degree in nursing from the University of Virginia. She also holds master of business administration and master of health services administration degrees from the University of Colorado.

Amy resides in Denver, CO, with her husband and twins.

As an associate principal on Sg2’s Intelligence team, Charlotte draws from long-standing hospital and health system experience to provide members with creative thought leadership and executable solutions for integrated direct-to-consumer and direct-to-physician attraction and retention strategies.

Prior to joining Sg2, Charlotte spent 18 years with integrated health systems where she built clinical program and physician marketing strategies and solutions for sustained business growth. She most recently led physician outreach for Beth Israel Lahey Health where she crafted and implemented a robust service line care retention and physician alignment program as well as targeted physician relationship development strategies. Prior to that, Charlotte served as vice president of strategy and marketing with Covenant Health where she led system and service line business strategy and enhanced system brand and marketing strategy.

Charlotte’s hospital and health system experience extends to marketing and communications leadership positions with Mission Health, where she elevated ambulatory physician practice and service line marketing development and innovative product positioning and campaign execution. Her earlier professional tenure was dedicated to driving successful business growth as the physician relations and communications lead for Norton Medical Group with Norton Healthcare.

Charlotte holds a bachelor of arts degree in English from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Outside of work, Charlotte enjoys traveling with her husband and two young children as well as their dog, a German Shepherd.

As part of Sg2’s Intelligence team, Justin takes a collaborative and data-driven approach to focus on complex care delivery. His areas of expertise include academic medicine, tertiary care, chronic care, medical utilization, precision medicine and the drivers of health. He tracks the strategic implications of emerging clinical trends and shares his findings with Sg2 members throughout the country. Justin’s future-focused research is grounded in today’s emerging best practices with a dedicated attention to innovative care models that address detrimental social determinants of health. His contributions anticipate future trends to accelerate the ability of health care executives to make better, faster strategic decisions.

Justin is a scientist by training. He has more than a decade of experience in emerging fields of inquiry that include genomics, diabetes, data science, stem cells, RNA interference and CRISPR. He has managed teams of scientists and driven collaborations to publish and present cutting-edge research that increased the predictive power of personalized genomics.

Prior to joining Sg2, Justin was a postdoctoral fellow at Northwestern University. He has also worked at the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Chicago; and the Whitehead Institute at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Justin earned a PhD in biomedical sciences from Northwestern University and an AB in biological sciences from the University of Chicago. Additionally, he holds certificates in data science from Northwestern’s McCormick School of Engineering and from the Management for Scientists and Engineers “mini-MBA” program at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management.

During his graduate studies, Justin received the Rappaport Award for Research Excellence. He also was selected to serve as a Malkin Scholar for Cancer Research in the Cellular and Molecular Basis of Disease Training Program and as a Chicago Biomedical Consortium Scholar. His findings have been published in top-tier scientific journals, and he has presented and won awards at conferences organized by the National Centers for Systems Biology and the Genetics Society of America.

Trevor works directly with boards and leadership teams to facilitate discussions about the top trends in health care and their local impact. He has authored briefings on topics including primary care, workforce planning, Medicare Advantage, disrupters, rural health, and health care strategic planning. He is a member of the Sg2 Analytics team, working to incorporate vast data resources into actionable insights. He leads the Sg2 Perspectives podcast, which has thousands of weekly listeners. He also has pioneered user groups focused on rural health and strategic planning best practices sharing.

Prior to his role at Sg2, Trevor used Sg2 Intelligence and Analytics as a member of the Johns Hopkins Medicine market analysis and business planning team. He started his career at United Cerebral Palsy in business development, raising money for programs for children with disabilities.

Trevor received an MBA from Johns Hopkins University and a BA in history from Syracuse University. When he is not building slides or staring at spreadsheets, Trevor likes to run, coach lacrosse, mountain bike, and ski with his wife and three kids in Evergreen, Colorado.

David DiLoreto is a principal at Sg2 and a physician executive with 2 decades of experience in health system, physician practice and managed care strategy and operations.

Prior to Sg2, Dr DiLoreto provided health care consulting and advisory services as senior vice president at GE Healthcare. Additionally, he served as corporate CMO at Presence Health in Chicago, IL, and he was simultaneously CEO of both SmartPlan Choice and Medicare Value Partners. He also served as the chief clinical officer at Baptist Health Care in Pensacola, FL.

Furthermore, Dr DiLoreto worked at the Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Medicine in New Orleans where he was a tenured faculty member before founding the university’s faculty group practice in 1995. During his 15-year career as an orbital and ophthalmic plastic surgeon at LSU Healthcare Network, he performed over 5,000 major surgical procedures and received numerous clinical and teaching awards.

Dr DiLoreto is a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology and serves as a director on the boards of health systems, professional societies, national trade associations, and early-stage IT and analytics firms.

After receiving his undergraduate degree from Loyola University New Orleans and medical degree from the University of Florida, Dr DiLoreto completed an ophthalmology residency at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco, CA, as well as fellowship training at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, and an MBA from Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

Brian is an enterprise strategy thought leader overseeing the development of Sg2 intelligence offerings related to federal and state payment and policy dynamics, revenue growth, scale, and the impact of value-based care delivery on health systems and suppliers. He supports health system executives and physician leaders in the development of strategic plans capable of accepting risk and transitioning to value-based care delivery.

Prior to joining Sg2, Brian was a director in the population health management division of a national consulting firm that KLAS rated number 1 in value-based care consulting and services for 3 years in a row. During that time, Brian developed multiple clinically integrated networks/accountable care organizations across the country, guiding them through the transition from fee-for-service to value-based care. Brian has also worked as a strategy consultant for regional consulting firms.

Brian received an MBA from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH, where he focused on finance. He also holds a BA from The Ohio State University, where he focused on international business and finance. Brian has served as a guest lecturer on health care reform at the University of Florida, the University of Pittsburgh and St Petersburg College. He currently lives in Cleveland with his wife and 3 highly energetic children. He enjoys traveling with his family, spending time outdoors and working out.

As a leader on Sg2’s Consulting team, Matt is focused on physician-hospital alignment, value-based care strategies and strategic planning, both service line–wide and enterprise-wide. He has experience in the design, development and implementation of accountable care organizations, clinically integrated networks (CINs) and comanagement agreements.   

Prior to Sg2, Matt served as senior manager within the National Strategy Practice of Dixon Hughes Goodman (DHG). In this role, he designed a CIN playbook for a large regional health system in the Southeast that expanded across 2 states and over 7 different health system partners. He also was involved in several internal cost savings/gainsharing engagements to help health systems, hospitals and large physician groups improve quality and reduce costs. Furthermore, Matt acquired technical expertise in developing funds flow methodologies based on rewards and created through value-based agreements (eg, shared savings, pay-for-performance, capitation).   

Additionally, Matt previously worked in the performance improvement consulting division at Ernst and Young, where he designed a new operating model for a state health care agency. He also worked with numerous health systems on meaningful use attestation requirements. Matt has written extensively on clinical integration, funds flow methodology, risk-based payments, narrow networks and community health needs assessments. His work has been published through DHG and in Becker’s Hospital Review.  

Matt holds a master of business administration degree, with a concentration in finance and financial reporting, and a master of science in management degree from Case Western Reserve University. He earned a bachelor of arts in political science from Denison University.
